Spotting phishing

Eight signs by which you can often recognise a phishing email.

  • Odd sender address

The name looks right, but the address behind it is different or contains a small spelling mistake.

  • Time pressure

"Within 24 hours" or "your account will be blocked". Fraudsters want you not to think.

  • Suspicious link

Hover over the link without clicking. If the address does not match the sender, do not click.

  • Unexpected attachment

An invoice or document you did not expect, especially a zip or an Office file with macros.

  • Request for money or data

Real organisations do not ask by email for passwords, PIN codes or a quick payment.

  • Impersonal greeting

"Dear customer" when the sender should know you.

  • Language or style mistakes

Strange sentences, odd formatting or a logo that is slightly off. Note that good phishing does not have these mistakes.

  • It does not feel right

In doubt? Do not click. Call the sender on a number you already know and report it to your administrator.
